Evidence and Solutions for improving SPONGE Functioning at LandSCAPE Scale in European Catchments for increased Resilience of Communities against Hydrometeorological Extreme Events
The project in brief
SpongeScapes focuses on the potential use of natural water retention measures to improve the sponge function of groundwater, soil and surface water across Europe.
The SpongeScapes project aims to improve scientific knowledge of the sponge function of soils and aquatic ecosystems at the scale of territories in European river basins in order to improve resilience to extreme hydrometeorological events, such as floods and droughts.
The Natural Water Retention Measures (NWRM) database, which includes 130 recorded case studies, is being updated and improved to provide a major pool of practical knowledge on these nature-based solutions. Eventually, it will also include information on implementation and maintenance methods. Local meetings and workshops are being organised throughout the project to disseminate the main findings and results.
OiEau’s missions
- Capitalising on knowledge of the sponge functions of landscapes, in particular updating the 130 case studies gathered in the Natural Water Retention Measures (NWRM) platform.
- Disseminating, communicating and exploiting the results
