The International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) is a non-profit association under French law, created in 1994 and based in Paris.
The International Office for Water (OiEau) is in charge of its Permanent Technical Secretariat. It has 192 Members from 88 countries, organized into Regional networks to encourage exchanges based on specific geographical contexts. For more than 30 years, INBO has placed the promotion and support for the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in national and transboundary river basins, lakes and aquifers at the heart of its mission of general interest.
It addresses all the operational aspects of this implementation, such as basin management planning, data sharing, cross-border cooperation, the institutional and legal framework, etc.
What are INBO’s activities?
INBO’s activities focus on the organization of events, the conception and implementation of projects, the management of advocacy and twinning initiatives, and the production of free publications.
In order to fulfill its mission and develop all these activities, INBO draws up a multi-year action plan, ratified by the World Liaison Bureau, the association’s decision-making body.
Over the years, INBO has become a recognised player in all international initiatives working to improve the safety of water resources and aquatic environments, for peace and sustainable development.
It has special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is accredited to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CDB).
INBO’s official languages are French, English and Spanish. Some publications or tools are also published in Russian and Chinese.

For more than 30 years, in a spirit of general interest, INBO has been promoting innovative ideas in integrated water resource management to reconcile environmental protection, economic growth, social justice and the participation of civil society.
We are proud to support the creation and strengthening of basin organizations, through the exchange of experience, access to information and the development of databases and tools. Solutions exist for efficient, sustainable management of water resources at a strategic basin level. We’re keen to share them!
