ANBO’s objectives are to :

  • to coordinate and strengthen support, cooperation and exchange of expertise, experience, information and knowledge between its members, African transboundary basin organisations, for enhanced dialogue, harmonisation and coordination of water management policies, strategies and practices.
  • to promote integrated water resources management at the level of river basins, lakes and aquifers, as an essential tool for sustainable development.

ANBO is also a technical advisory body to the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) of the African Union’s (AU) New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).

As such, it issues advisories and recommendations to AMCOW on all its decisions relating to the concerted management of transboundary basins, for example to achieve the sustainable development objectives set out in Agenda 2063 and the African Union’s African Water Vision for 2025.
